Why Does My Face Turn Red After Being In The Cold?

Hey everyone Zach here

Sorry for the absence, where I work its ALWAYS hectic over Christmas I literally had zero time to blog but I’m back and ready to discuss all things red 🙂

So if I didn’t mention before I work outside, and there are pros and cons to working outside as opposed to inside. Sometimes I think to myself maybe my skin would be better if I worked inside, but then I have no escape. But working outside in the summer I have to watch out for the sun, burning my skin, in Autumn I have to prepare for wind and rain and in winter it’s cold ice snow, wind rain sun EVERYTHING!!!!

So here in the UK it’s really cold, and one thing that my blushing cures don’t seem to cover are the dreaded red face from working in the cold. As I have sensitive skin it really doesn’t seem to matter what I do my face ends up like a tomato for hours it just does not calm down.

Any of you get this?

red face

I have worked for ten hours in the freezing cold today, I have had a bath put a cold flannel on my face but nothing is helping. So I wanted to write this post and discuss ways we can help reduce redness on our faces after being out in cold weather.

I have been researching and the approach we are going to try that’s me as well as you 🙂 I’m calling it preparing for prevention I like that 🙂

So we probably all get this weird effect from the cold not just blushers but our face, hands, bottom turn red when faced with long periods of cold. It’s actually called vasoconstriction which is the narrowing of the blood vessels so reduces blood flood, thus resulting in less swelling and redness on the surface of our skin. the blood vessels in the face when dilated can sometimes burst to cause excessive redness.

I have really sensitive skin too so it doesn’t help in the winter, skin is our barrier from the elements and in the winter I think our skin tends to be a lot drier and sensitive so it needs extra help during the winter.

So what could we do to try and help to reduce the intensity of the red face we may suffer when out in the cold for long periods? I mean we can’t just sit inside away from the cold for the entire winter so we have to prepare. If we could just keep our faces from getting more dry, tight and sensitive we should be able to reduce the intensity of the redness.

As I coined the phrase earlier preparing for prevention 🙂

I have found four different ways we can help prevent the red face of winter. So to start with instead of washing your face with hot water and soap and scented strong body gel, try a face wash for sensitive skin such as  Olay Foaming Face Wash. That’s just an example you would have to find which product suits you and remember don’t use really hot water.

After your bath you really need to moisturise to help with the tightness and dryness of your skin, so let’s try thicker moisturizers. Look for moisturizers that contain ceramides and hyaluronic acid, the ceramide copies the skins natural lipid barrier and the hyaluronic acid locks water in.

For example look for products that soothe, hydrate and reduce inflammation so many about just have to find the one for you. Burt’s Bees Sensitive Night Cream 50g £12 on Amazon soothes the skin and SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective Gel hydrates and soothes the skin it’s expensive but just an example.

If you are out facing the elements maybe wrap a scarf around your face, use a face mask and goggles anything to reduce exposing yourself to the winter elements and reduce that red face.

Try using sunscreen yes even in winter, at least a factor SPF 30 make sure it’s for sensitive skin and easy to apply so you don’t irritate your skin when applying.

As well as the creams and gels try utilising Antioxidants like vitamin c and ferulic acid which helps repair the skin. Exfoliation is highly recommended too, I found DR DENNIS GROSS Alpha Beta Ultra Gentle Daily Peel – 30 Application Packet’s it is for sensitive skin and uses alpha-hydroxy acids in levels that won’t aggravate redness, again it’s expensive it’s just an example of a product you should use.

Ok so you have prepared for prevention you will have to look around for cheaper products that will fit your budget, you may find you don’t need ALL of them to help reduce redness on your face.

Of course, you should think about your diet, drink more water, eat more veg, exercise reduce alcohol etc it will all help.

Ok so I hope your face feels less red this winter bye for now
